Swamp milkweed
Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) is the monarch host plant for saturated soils. It supports monarch larvae, produces heavy nectar for adult butterflies and bees, and establishes far more reliably than most wet-site forbs — making it essential in wetland buffer and wet pollinator mixes.
Why landowners plant swamp milkweed
- Monarch larval host species on hydric ground where butterfly milkweed fails.

Site fit
Plant in wet and wet-mesic zones: pothole margins, drainage swales, wetland buffers, rain gardens, and the low areas of CP23 and CP42 wet plantings. It will not persist on dry uplands.
Establishment
Requires 30–60 days of cold-moist stratification; dormant seeding handles this naturally. Surface sow to a shallow 1/8 inch depth. Blooms in year two.
Management
Fire tolerant when dormant. Long-lived and stable — populations hold without spreading aggressively.

Frequently asked questions
Yes as a larval host, and better as a mix component. Monarchs lay eggs on it readily and its nectar is excellent, while it stays as a well-behaved clump instead of spreading by rhizome the way common milkweed does.
It tolerates mesic sites with reliable moisture but declines on dry uplands. For dry to dry-mesic ground, use butterfly milkweed instead so your mix carries a milkweed in every moisture zone.
